Let’s be honest, being without a partner at Christmas can suck.
There is plenty you can do to ease the solitude and still have a great time and count your blessings as our founder Dennie has advised.
But sometimes, a bit like Bridget Jones singing along to Without You on her sofa in her pyjamas, belting out a Christmas song, especially one that laments a lost love can also help banish the Yuletide blues.
These are our favourites.
5. Last Christmas – Wham
The wonderful Wham hit is now an unbelievable 35 years old. Yes you read that right. Given a new lease of life in a new schmaltzy film. Despite its age, it’s timeless.
4. River – Joni Mitchell/Ellie Goulding
A haunting folk song by Joni Mitchell, from her 1971 album Blue. It was never released as a single but has become one of Mitchell’s most recorded works – with Ellie Goulding bringing it bang up to date this year.
3. Fairytale of New York – The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl
With more than 61 million hits on YouTube, this beloved Christmas anthem of love and loss has weathered a storm of controversy about what some now see as unacceptable lyrics.
2. Lonely This Christmas – Mud
Aww – so sad! But there’s also something joyous about these 70s costumes and Les Gray’s heart-rending delivery of the cheesy sentiments – especially the spoken interlude- love it!
1. Blue Christmas – Elvis Presley
The King at his most mesmerising in his 1968 comeback special. Pure class. Who doesn’t love this stellar performance?
